MAIDENHAIR TREE – GINKGO BILOBA L.

Height – can reach up to 40 m in favourable habitats.

Habitus – a broad-pyramidal crown at a young age, and later acquires an oval shape.

Bark – in young age smooth, grey-brown, adult trees are grey, cracked longitudinally.

Leaves – length about 10 cm and width – up to about 12 cm with the shape of an incised at the top fan. The leaves are located on a single, and on the truncated branches and group.

Seeds – elliptic, 2-3 cm long and 1-2 cm wide. They are covered with three layers – fleshy, woody and pellicle. Dioecious species (female and male).

Requirements– a light-loving species, requires high atmospheric humidity, fresh, fertile, calcium-rich soils. Resistant to atmospheric pollution and urban conditions.

Interesting Facts – A relict of Eastern China, considered by the Buddhists as a sacred tree. It was transported to Europe around 1730. In the autumn, its leaves are golden yellow in colour.
